My small company recently decided to use on hold music to “entertain” our clients that were…well, on hold.  Making the decision was easy…actually implementing the music to be played was a bit more difficult.

Copyright laws can be stringent, and are no exception when it comes to on-hold music.  Playing music from the radio, a CD or a legally downloaded MP3 file doesn’t cut it…you only have the rights to private performance for those forms of music – meaning you can play them for your enjoyment with friends and family.  Not adhering to the appropriate copyright laws can mean hefty statutory damages.

My advice?  Use a creative hold music service provider since they are well-versed in the applicable copyright laws and many provide original copywriting to ensure your message is creative and pertinent to your services.
